1. Sedentary (i.e., participated in less than 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days per week for six months or longer.2. Would be living in Auckland, New Zealand for at least 12 months from the time of their recruitment to the trial.

1. Had a medical history or major health problem that meant walking would be contrindicated (assessed by their general practitioner).
