Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Movement practice (yoga) tenure/frequency for prior month; heart rate variability (HRV) daily self-recorded measurements for 2-weeks; online survey measures completed once per participant on enrolment: health habits (smoking, alcohol intake, sleep); nutrition/physical activity self-efficacy; interoceptive awareness; and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF) which collates the past week's activity levels. Qualitative responses on movement practice and lifestyle for full cohort via online survey and via semi-structured interview (one-on-once based on study-specific questions, audio-recorded) for a random subset of participants at earliest convenience after completion of the survey.

Outcomes
Primary outcome [1] 323958 0
Self-regulation (defined as pro-health habits/behaviour) as experienced by movement practitioners (yoga practitioners/gym users).
Survey included a mixture of validated surveys: the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF), the Nutrition Self-Efficacy and Physical Exercise Self-Efficacy Scales, and the noticing, emotional awareness, and body listening questions from the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) scale to reduce the time burden on participants.
Timepoint [1] 323958 0
On enrolment.
Primary outcome [2] 323959 0
Heart rate variability (HRV) - objective indicator of neural state, i.e. parasympathetic to sympathetic balance, via smartphone app (HRV4Training) and participant upload of recorded data shared with researcher.
Timepoint [2] 323959 0
Observed 14 data points - 1x daily where possible, up to 14 measurements.
Primary outcome [3] 326714 0
Observed: self-report via online survey and interview one-on-one(for subset of cohorts). A record of participants' movement practice and health habits at the time of the study.
Consideration of practice tenure/frequency as a variable: Explored to determine any relationship between practice tenure/frequency and health habits.
Timepoint [3] 326714 0
At enrolment.
Secondary outcome [1] 383436 0
Interoceptive awareness (via select questions from the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) scale.
Timepoint [1] 383436 0
Scale completed once as part of online survey (after enrolment).
Secondary outcome [2] 383437 0
Self-efficacy (exercise) via The Physical Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale - within the online survey
Timepoint [2] 383437 0

Summary
Brief summary
A mixed methods doctoral study was designed to explore the topic of adherence to a movement practice through the lens of the lived experience of consistent practitioners. Movement practitioners (6-months minimum practice tenure; yoga practitioners/gym users) self-selected as having a regular practice that they considered to be their primary modality of movement. The protocol does not prescribe an ‘intervention’, but instead collates data on each participant’s version of a practice, including tenure and frequency., A movement practice is thus defined by the participants. Data on health habits were collected via an online survey tool incorporating self-efficacy (with respect to diet and physical activity) and overall activity levels, in addition to participants’ specified primary movement practice. The inclusion of heart rate variability as a quantitative objective measure provides an opportunity to consider the hypothesis that a movement practice may support self-regulation (in the context of pro-health habits or behaviour) mediated by the parasympathetic nervous system. Semi-structured interviews and open-ended online survey questions, combined with a measure of interoception, provide an experiential lens.

Public notes
This doctoral research study explores adherence to movement from the perspective of committed movement practitioners, considering the impact of practice tenure and modality (yoga vs. gym use). The aim being to consider strategies that support practitioners to adopt and adhere to a movement practice, and whether pro-health habits and behaviours result.
