Registering a new trial?

To achieve prospective registration, we recommend submitting your trial for registration at the same time as ethics submission.

The safety and scientific validity of this study is the responsibility of the study sponsor and investigators. Listing a study does not mean it has been endorsed by the ANZCTR. Before participating in a study, talk to your health care provider and refer to this information for consumers

Intervention/exposure
Study type
Interventional
Description of intervention(s) / exposure
Both arms of the study involve total hip joint replacement - performed with cementless implants (Pinnacle acetabular shell with Ultramet metal insert with a Corail cementless femoral stem). The patient will then be randomised to receive either a ceramic (biolox) or metal (ultamet) femoral head. Operation time is estimated at 60 minutes.

Treatment
Allocation to intervention
Randomised controlled trial
Procedure for enrolling a subject and allocating the treatment (allocation concealment procedures)
Allocation involves contacting the holder of the allocation sequence who is 'off-site'
Methods used to generate the sequence in which subjects will be randomised (sequence generation)
A randomisation sequence has been prepared in advance using computerised sequence generation . The sequence includes a treatment allocation stratified by surgeon.
Masking / blinding
Blinded (masking used)
Who is / are masked / blinded?

The people assessing the outcomes
The people analysing the results/data

Summary
Brief summary
This randomised controlled study of 80 patients receiving total hip joint replacements aims to compare the post operative serum metal ion levels, functional outcomes and radiological parameters of ceramic-on-metal and metal-on-metal bearing surfaces. All patients will receive the same acetabular component (Pinnacle) and femoral stem (Corail) with only the femoral head component been randomised to either a biolox cermic head of ultamet metal head. Results at 6,12,24 and 60 months will be compared.
